Fire Alarm System Maintenance
To stay compliant with fire safety legislation, owners of commercial buildings should undertake regular fire alarm servicing and maintenance to ensure their fire alarm system is functioning correctly. Inspection of your fire safety system should happen regularly and British Standard BS 5839-1 states that at least twice a year a competent person with specialist knowledge of fire detection systems should carry out a full service and inspection. For larger premises, quarterly inspections are recommended. That’s in addition to regular testing by your in-house fire safety personnel on a weekly basis. All business premises must adhere to these strict guidelines and the experienced team at Mercury Fire and Security are here to help.

We can put together a fire alarm system maintenance plan for your premises to ensure this legal requirement is always met and we will take care of everything, helping your peace of mind.
A further benefit of professional fire alarm maintenance is that it will help your local fire and rescue services. Old, poorly maintained fire alarm systems can produce regular false alarms, and Home Office statistics suggest over 40% of total fire and rescue service call outs are false alarms. Properly maintaining your fire alarm system and taking preventive measures to reduce potential problems within the system will significantly reduce false alarms and free up the fire brigade’s time to deal with serious fire break outs.

Fire Alarm System Maintenance - What Are Your Legal Obligations?
British Standards set out a number of obligations around fire alarm maintenance, inspections and services, which all business premises must adhere to.
BS 5839-1 Clause 45.3 states: “The period between successive inspection and servicing visits should not exceed six months. If this recommendation is not implemented, it should be considered that the system is no longer compliant with this part of BS 5839.” This means if your fire alarm system is not properly serviced at least every six months, you are no longer compliant with British Standards.
And in Clause 45.1 of BS 5839, it states “Periodic inspection and servicing needs to be carried out by a competent person with specialist knowledge of fire detection and fire alarm systems, including knowledge of the causes of false alarms, sufficient information regarding the system, and adequate access to spares. This is normally an outside fire alarm servicing organization (…) Competence of a fire alarm servicing organization can be assured by the use of organizations that are third-party certificated, by a UKAS-accredited certification body [such as a BAFE SP203-1 Registered Organisation], to carry out inspection and servicing of fire alarm systems.” Mercury Fire and Security is fully-certified by many different fire inspection accreditors, meaning we are more than qualified to be your fire alarm servicing and maintenance company of choice.
